Why Is Purdue Called the Boilermakers?

There is a great story behind one of the most recognizable nicknames in college sports.

Purdue’s first football team played in 1887, but the Boilermakers nickname came a few years later. After Purdue defeated Wabash College 44–0 in 1891, a Crawfordsville newspaper referred to Purdue’s players as the “burly boiler makers.” Other colorful names had been used for Purdue teams, but Boilermakers eventually became the name that stuck.

The nickname also fit Purdue’s identity. Founded as a land-grant institution, Purdue developed a reputation for practical education, engineering and agriculture. The school’s association with engineering and a locomotive laboratory gave opponents plenty of material for the boiler-maker nickname.

More than 130 years later, the Purdue Boilermakers name is one of the defining identities of the university.

Old Gold & Black: The Purdue Colors

There may not be a more recognizable college color combination in the Big Ten than Purdue Old Gold and Black.

Those colors have been part of Purdue athletics for well over a century, and the combination continues to define everything from football uniforms and basketball jerseys to Purdue T-shirts, hoodies and polos.

That’s one reason Purdue apparel works so well visually. A black Boilermakers hoodie, an Old Gold Purdue T-shirt or a black-and-gold jersey immediately connects the wearer to Purdue.

The university’s modern football uniforms have also deliberately looked back at earlier eras, including the 1990s. Purdue’s own uniform history notes how designs from the Mike Alstott era helped influence the 2024 look, with “PURDUE” once again prominently displayed across the chest.

Purdue Football Legends

Purdue’s football history includes some remarkably recognizable names.

Bob Griese

Bob Griese was one of the defining Purdue quarterbacks of the 1960s. A two-time first-team All-American, Griese helped lead Purdue to a victory in the 1967 Rose Bowl and went on to become both a College Football Hall of Famer and Pro Football Hall of Famer.

Rod Woodson

Rod Woodson starred at Purdue from 1983 through 1986 and became one of the greatest defensive backs in football history. His Purdue career included the famous 1986 Old Oaken Bucket game, when the Boilermakers wore gold jerseys in a memorable victory. Woodson later spent 17 seasons in the NFL and was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2009.

Mike Alstott

Purdue fans of the 1990s remember Mike Alstott, the powerful fullback known as the A-Train. Purdue’s 2024 uniform redesign specifically drew inspiration from the 1990s era in which Alstott became one of the program’s most recognizable stars.

Drew Brees

And then there is Drew Brees.

Brees played at Purdue from 1997 through 2000 and helped take the Boilermakers to the 2001 Rose Bowl. Purdue’s uniform history credits him with leaving the school as the holder of numerous Big Ten and school passing records.

For Purdue fans, names such as Griese, Woodson, Alstott and Brees are reminders that Boilermaker football has a history that stretches far beyond any single season.

Purdue Basketball Legends

Purdue’s identity isn’t limited to football.

Basketball has its own remarkable history, including John Wooden, who played at Purdue before becoming one of the most celebrated coaches in basketball history. Purdue’s basketball tradition also includes stars such as Rick Mount and Glenn “Big Dog” Robinson.

Robinson was a consensus first-team All-American in 1994 and was named the National Player of the Year that season, making him one of the most accomplished players ever to wear the Purdue uniform.

That history makes Purdue basketball jerseys appealing to more than just fans of today’s team. Some fans want a current player jersey, while others are drawn to the stars and eras that made Purdue basketball part of college basketball history.

From Classic Purdue Jerseys to Today’s Boilermakers

Purdue’s uniforms have changed dramatically over the decades, from early football jerseys with a simple “P” to the gold-and-black designs worn today.

The university’s own history documents everything from leather helmets and early block lettering to the iconic styles of the Griese era, the 1980s Rod Woodson years, the Alstott and Brees years of the 1990s and 2000s, and the modern return to a prominent PURDUE across the chest.

That evolution is part of what makes a Purdue jersey fun to wear. You’re not simply wearing a piece of clothing — you’re wearing a version of Purdue history.

For today’s fans, that can mean a current Purdue football jersey, a Boilermakers basketball jersey, a personalized Purdue custom jersey or a classic-looking Purdue shirt in a big or tall size.

Purdue Apparel for Big & Tall Boilermaker Fans

The right Purdue apparel should fit the fan, not force the fan to squeeze into whatever limited sizes happen to be available.

That’s why the extended-size selection includes XXL, 3XL, 4XL, 5XL and 6XL, plus XLT through 5XLT tall sizes. Whether you’re shopping for a Purdue jersey for game day or a Purdue T-shirt for everyday wear, you can look beyond standard sizing.

Some of the most specific searches from big and tall fans are also the simplest: Purdue 4XL shirt, Purdue 5XL shirt, Purdue 4XL jersey, Purdue 5XL jersey, Purdue 4XL hoodie and Purdue 5XL hoodie.

Those aren’t unusual sizes to us. They’re simply part of the search for Purdue apparel that fits.

One of the best ways to make a Purdue jersey unique is to customize it.

Instead of choosing only from a fixed list of player jerseys, a custom Purdue jersey can give you the flexibility to use the name and number of a current Boilermaker player or create a personalized jersey of your own.

That can be especially useful when a fan wants a jersey for a player who isn’t available as a standard option. It also gives families and longtime Purdue fans an opportunity to create something personal while still wearing the classic Old Gold and Black.
